Events involving extreme heat are growing more common throughout Europe. A strong heatwave struck Paris in the summer of 2025. Early in the morning, NASA's ECOSTRESS instrument highlighted urban heat stress by recording surface temperatures of 82°F (28°C).

By measuring thermal infrared emissions from the Earth's surface, ECOSTRESS enables researchers to track the temperature of the land surface, plant stress, and the spread of wildfires. Before morning, temperatures in a number of city blocks, notably those close to the Eiffel Tower, topped 80°F (27°C). Launched in 2018, the tool aids in evaluating how excessive heat affects ecosystems and urban infrastructure, offering France important information for climate adaptation.

In order to promote climate resilience, urban planning, and environmental safety initiatives in France, NASA ECOSTRESS offers vital data.
